Victoria's state capital city Melbourne was first settled in 1835 and declared a city in 1847. Now a large financial and industrial centre, Melbourne is home to many of Australia's top companies and it's largest seaport.

Approximately one-third of all overseas companies with a base of operations in Australia choose Melbourne as their location, and the city also has the majority of Australia's automotive industry.

Melbourne is a major sporting city, and hosts a variety of national and international events. The Australian Grand Prix is held here, as is the Grand Final of the Aussie Rules Football League (AFL). The Melbourne Cup held every November is almost certainly the most famous horse racing fixture in Australia.

Melbourne has numerous universities, the two most prestigious probably being the University of Melbourne and Monash University.
